Driverless cars have been in development for a number of years and could completely reinvigorate the automotive industry around the world. After they are introduced into the UK, experts claim that by 2030 they could create 320,000 jobs including 25,000 manufacturing roles. Alongside the motor trade recruitment benefits they will bring approximately £51 billion a year in revenue, boosting the economy and providing new income for the government in terms of tax.

Autonomous vehicles are being promoted because they offer so many benefits in terms of safety. By utilising them it is claimed that the number of traffic accidents would fall dramatically, both in terms of serious incidents and smaller bumps. The improvements would in turn result in lives being saved, injuries avoided and fewer insurance payouts. From a safety perspective driverless cars are an impressive proposition.

The UK Government has already shown support for the technology by failing to ratify an EU Convention that stated vehicles must have a driver. Four pilot schemes have also run backed by £19 million of Government funding. These occurred in London, Bristol, Milton Keynes and Coventry, four important automotive cities and locations that would benefit greatly from their introduction. The pilots investigate how technology will be incorporated into British roads when the vehicles get introduced.

If the ambitious plans for driverless technology come to fruition it could propel the UK automotive industry to a whole new level. The job potential is astonishing and there would be countless opportunities for engineers, designers and other complimentary technologies too. It is already well placed from a research and development point of view. The great infrastructure also offers numerous benefits.
