Six of the last nine general elections coincided with an interruption to new car sales. This year’s election, however, resulted in no such spike as political uncertainty had zero impact on the UK demand for new vehicles. In fact, April’s registrations exceeded industry expectations and reached a record high. We saw the strongest April since 2005 and the figures highlight the continued growth in customer confidence in spite of the uncertainty regarding the election. The new UK automotive market is fully expected to keep thriving and continue to create a world of employment opportunities.

New car sales are so far up 6.4 in comparison with the same point in 2014. Consumer appetite in part has been helped by inexpensive finance deals making new cars more affordable. The UK car industry has beaten records tracing as far back as 1959 with the longest ever continuous period of sales growth of new vehicles. The top three bestselling cars in April were the Ford Focus, Fiesta and the Volkswagon Golf.

Although private sales have risen it is fleet sales that have made the major contribution and the economic fundamentals of the automotive industry retain a healthy outlook with sector experts predicting that car sales will be sustained at a robust level over the coming months.
