The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) recently released the first reports relating to the performance of the UK automotive sector in 2017. Information released in respect of commercial vehicle sales and registrations during January have shown that growth levels have continued to increase. Whilst the growth has increased once again, it is interesting to note a shift in terms of the type of commercial vehicles being registered.
There has been a significant change in the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) section of the market. Sales and registration clearly show that the pickup truck is being seen as the ideal vehicle for many business and commercial purposes, with significant increases being recorded. The number of pickups sold and registered increased by nearly 30%. The registrations for comparable vehicles – 4x4s and under 2t vans – both fell, but not by a consolidated figure which was higher than the increased number of pickups registered.
It is vitally important for the sustained success of the UK automotive sector to ensure trends like this one are monitored, anticipated and acted upon in the most advantageous way possible. This allows companies to be prepared to take advantage of the current market conditions.

At this moment in time there are a number of factors in place which many believe will place pressure on the UK automotive industry. Key figures within the industry are aware of this, and measures are being taken to ensure that the pressures are managed. One way to do this is recruit staff early.
