A warm welcome for Aston Martin in Wales

Aston Martin is a renowned brand with a passionate following all around the world. The news that the manufacturer has chosen Wales as the location where they will produce their latest model is a sign of the power and prestige of the automotive sector in the UK. It is even more headline worthy for the fact that St Athan in South Wales beat competition from 20 other locations across the globe.

The brand new DBX is a crossover vehicle that is designed to be family friendly, luxurious, practical and environmentally friendly too. The concept was revealed at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2015 and generated a huge amount of interest.

The vehicle will initially be available in petrol and hybrid variants before a full electric version is introduced. Plans are in place for production to begin in 2020. Before then a new manufacturing centre needs to be created. A former RAF site in St Athan has been chosen as the home for this. The existing hangar will be converted to house the facility. Work is set to start on this in 2017.

Aston Martin will invest a huge amount in the manufacturing facility. The exact number is not yet known, but it is expected to run into the hundreds of millions. Once finished, the DBX will become the first vehicle to be manufactured in Wales in over 40 years. The last one was a sports car by Gilbern which was made between 1959 and 1973 in Pontypridd.

The investment from Aston Martin will create many automotive jobs in the region. It is estimated that around 750 high skilled people will be employed in the facility itself. The DBX will be made by hand so many of these employees will have a hands on role. An additional 1,000 motor industry jobs could also be created up and down the supply chain.
