More and more automotive companies are taking steps to meet the needs of a more environmentally conscious customer base, and Ford are no exception. Their engineers in Essex and Germany have been working on a new generation of petrol engines designed to make more efficient use of fuel, cutting down on costs and helping vehicle owners to reduce their carbon footprint.

One of the most exciting aspects of this story is the fact that Bridgend’s Ford plant has been chosen to produce these new engines, seeing off competition from three other European Ford plants. Production will start in 2018 and will be backed by £15m of investment from the Welsh government.

The Bridgend plant was opened in 1980 and since then has secured investments worth more than £2.8bn, thanks to the dedication and skill of the workforce. 1,860 people are currently employed there. This new initiative is expected to ensure more than 750 jobs, which will be secure for years while production is carried out. In the highly competitive global automotive market, this is a significant investment for the area and something that will certainly add a real boost to employment and the UK’s automotive economy.
